11/10/2024Grass is a type of evergreen grass that most people grow in their gardens or spread in their yards. It is a grass that can adapt to different climatic conditions such as deserts and others; it remains green in hot areas throughout the year, but in areas where temperatures drop to less than 15.5 degrees Celsius, grass spends a period of the year in a state of vital dormancy (hibernation). It is from the Poaceae family of plants. As for its name, it has different names, including Bermuda Grass, Quick Grass, and Couch Grass, in addition to other names. Grass is widely available in southern Africa, and the Spanish brought grass to America from Africa in the sixteenth century for the first time. Grass lives in different types of soil, especially if it is fertile soil, and is common in desert areas, gardens, wild areas, and residential areas, and is found in humid areas on the banks of rivers. The method of planting grass is very easy compared to other plants, and it is also multi-use; as grass is planted for grazing or decoration purposes, and it is usually recommended to plant it for decoration purposes for a short period; because it grows quickly, and it is difficult to get rid of it and remove its roots, so whoever does not want it cannot get rid of it easily; its roots are characterized by extreme strength. It is worth noting that many agricultural pests feed on grass, but they do not negatively affect its growth. If grass is planted for grazing, overgrazing can inhibit its growth. The importance of grass is that it prevents soil damage and erosion. It plays an important role in preserving it. It also protects waterways if it grows around them. It was used in ancient medicine to treat indigestion and wounds.
How to grow grass
Grass grass is known for its wide popularity, especially in areas with hot climates. There are basic steps to growing grass, namely:
Ensure that the climate is suitable: Palm cultivation is successful in tropical and subtropical regions, such as: Africa, India, Australia, and the southern United States of America. As for very cold areas, it is preferable to use another type of grass that is able to live in cold climates.
Tilling the soil: This is done by tilling the soil and cleaning it, either mechanically or manually, to get rid of weeds; Which allows the lawn to grow without competition from other grasses, and it is also possible to re-plough more than once to ensure the cleanliness of the soil, then get rid of the weeds away, and the rocks in the soil must be removed.
Soil test: This is the soil in which the lawn grass is to be planted, as it is more successful in soil with an acidity between 5.6-7, and a soil acidity test can be conducted in one of the specialized laboratories. If the soil is very acidic, lime can be added to it to adjust this, but if it is very alkaline and not suitable, it can be adjusted using sulfur.
Fertilizing the soil with organic materials: Soil rich in organic materials helps the successful cultivation of lawn grass, while clay soil is not suitable for planting it.
Planting seeds in the soil: This depends on ensuring that they are distributed evenly, and a seed disperser can be used to help distribute them evenly throughout.
Covering the seeds with a thin layer of soil: Submerging the seeds under the soil to a large extent will limit their growth, but they should be covered with only a thin layer, and a soil comb can be used to comb the seeds and soil and mix them together.
Watering the seeds: They must be watered immediately after planting, and continue to be watered daily to keep the soil moist. Although the lawn grass is able to live in dry soil, it needs a large amount of water in the first three weeks, then gradually reduce the watering of the lawn after it grows.
Fertilize the soil whenever it needs it: The lawn plant takes 10 to 30 days to mature if the ideal conditions for its growth are available.
As for spreading and extending the rolls of lawn in a garden or yard, the following must be followed:
Purchase the required rolls of lawn from the market after measuring the area to be covered.
Water the land on which the lawn is to be extended, or clean the yard if there is no soil; So that it is not correct to extend the rolls of grass over dirt, as water works to keep the ground moist underneath it and keeps it young.
Extend the grass on the plot of land, and make sure to cover it completely, and be careful not to leave gaps between the rows of grass and level it well, and use a shovel to remove the excess parts at the edges, for example, or in places where the grass is not intended to be extended.
Water the grass every morning daily, and it is preferable not to walk on it for a week after extending it on the plot of land.
Grass Care
Grass care varies from season to season, but it is preferable to plant it in the spring after the end of the cold or frost season. Due to the high growth rate of grass and its rapid growth, it requires a lot of care; its soil must be fertilized constantly, especially at the time of peak growth. It must also be trimmed and cut twice a week to maintain its aesthetic appearance and desired height, which is from one inch to one and a half inches in home gardens. Since grass stops growing during dry periods while remaining green, irrigation must be intensified during this period.
It can be said that grass is a hot season grass, and it requires its presence in areas exposed to sunlight. It is resistant to salinity, drought and heat, and it does not spoil when walked on. Grass resists surrounding conditions in general; its roots strike the ground to a depth of approximately six feet. It is worth mentioning that the lawn needs to be watered a lot, and it also needs to be pruned and fed to the soil in which it is planted constantly. You can know whether the lawn needs watering or not from the shape of its needle leaves; as its head bends down a little in the event of drought, and because it is resistant to drought, its roots extend deep in search of moisture and water whenever it needs it.
